40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 10 Days to Launch

Today, there are only 10 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10. We are asking you to join us in what God is doing in these last 40 days.

Pray with us. Act with us. Imagine the impact we could have in Helena if each one of us is individually involved in making Helena a better place. Imagine the lives that could be touched. Imagine how the spiritual landscape of our community could be changed even BEFORE the grand opening.

An Unknown God?

Today, we are looking at Acts 17:22-23 ...
So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: "Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: 'To an Unknown God.' This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.
When Paul was in Athens, he saw how they worshiped many idols. Just in case, the Athenians even had an alter to "an Unknown God" in case they left one out. While we hate to admit it, many of us do the same. We try to cover our bases by going to church and saying the right things on Sunday. People all around us believe that they worship God. In reality, we sometimes only worship our their idea of God. But we really don't know the One whom we "worship."

When we don't actually know the One we worship, then it isn't true worship.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Worship is a response. When God reveals himself to us in some way, when we are in awe of Him, we respond in true worship. We must know God, even in the smallest way, to truly worship Him. Anything else is acting. Anything else is pretend. Our prayer today? Ask God to reveal Himself to you today. Ask Him to open your eyes and allow you to see His "awesomeness" (I don't use that word lightly here).

TODAY'S IMPACT

Your impact today is to help someone know God better. Certainly sharing scripture reveals the character of God. But your encounters with God can resonate deeper. When we extend grace and mercy where none is due, that can resonate deeper. Today, make difference. Help someone know God more than they did before they met you.

We invite you to be a part of something greater than yourself. Connect with a people discovering what it means to follow Jesus in the context of real life. Our Grand Opening is just 10 days away on 10-10-10 and we would be honored if you could come celebrate with us.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 12 Days to Launch

Today, there are 12 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Does Your Heart Burn Within?

Today, we are looking at Luke 24:32 ...
They said to each other, "Didn’t our hearts burn within us as [Jesus] talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?"
I've been working on a press release for local Helena media to announce the upcoming Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10. The headline reads, "New Encounter Church promises to 'ignite' Helena" and I can't help but think of the disciples who were traveling on the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus after Jesus was crucified.

Jesus appeared and began to walk with them, but they were unaware that it was Jesus. And during that walk, Jesus "took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself." Not until Jesus vanished, were their eyes opened and they realized He was Jesus.

Our hearts burn when we walk in His presence.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Our desire at Encounter is for people to encounter God — to experience Jesus firsthand. Does your heart burn within you as you experience His presence? Our prayer today is for God to grant us a burning heart which desires to see Him and know Him in each and every situation in your life — at home, at work, at the office, at the marketplace, at school, in your neighborhood, and in your church.

TODAY'S IMPACT

We firmly believe that God is not boring. In fact, it may be a sin to make God seem boring. If we are truly experiencing God's presence in worship, the scriptures will come alive to us and our hearts will burn within.

When is the last time you had a conversation like that with a friend? Instead of simply engaging academics and sharing information, speak of the way your life has changed — and is being changed — through Jesus. Nothing is more exciting than that fire that has been "ignited" within you.

We invite you to be a part of something greater than yourself. Connect with a people discovering what it means to follow Jesus in the context of real life. Our Grand Opening is just 12 days away on 10-10-10 and we would be honored if you could come celebrate with us.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 13 Days to Launch

Today, there are 13 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

A Tiny Spark

Today, we are looking at James 3:5b ...
But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.
In the book of James, he writes of controlling the tongue. Certainly, our words cause a world of hurt. But amidst this discussion of watching what we say, I was struck by a small, simple truth — that a "tiny spark can set a great forest on fire." While this is true in the worst of circumstances, it is also true in the best. And that is what I am seeing today, with only 13 days left before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Too often, we think that we are too small to make a difference. We think we are too small to begin a movement of change that will change the face of our world. The truth is that while you are only one person, you ARE one person that can make a difference. You may only be able to provide a spark of hope for just one other person.

But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.

TODAY'S PRAYER

If every "fire" requires a spark, the beginning may start with you. Are you "on fire" for what God is doing in Helena? Are you excited to see what He will do next? Perhaps our prayer today is to ask God to light that fire within us. Perhaps we still need His "spark" inside to begin a great fire. Regardless, ask God today to renew that fire to see lives restored through Jesus.

TODAY'S IMPACT

The desire of those at Encounter, is to see people's lives changed for the better. We want to ignite a passion for Jesus that leads to an amazing, abundant life. And all it takes is a spark. So today, light some sparks for the people in your sphere of influence.

Start a conversation with a cashier. Tell a fellow customer about the Encounter Grand Opening and how you are connected. Some sparks may light and some may not. But one thing is for sure, every great fire starts from a single spark..

We invite you to be a part of something greater than yourself. It may only be a spark now, but it will soon be a great fire. Connect with a people discovering what it means to follow Jesus in the context of real life. Our Grand Opening is less than two weeks away on 10-10-10 and we would be honored if you could come celebrate with us.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: Two Weeks to Launch

Today, there are 15 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Don't Give Up

Today, we are looking at Galatians 6:9 ...
So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
If I can be honest, starting a church is hard work. It wears on the heart, soul, and body. Sometimes when we fail to see the results, we begin to grow weary. Doing the good and right thing almost never means taking the path of least resistance — and the same is true in life and faith.

So the temptation is always there to give up and give in. And without God's Spirit and His promises we would never persevere. So let me encourage you this weekend that God knows what He is doing. He is encouraging you from His Word to stay strong. Draw on His strength, to do the hard and difficult thing that is righteous and good — for He is preparing a "harvest of blessing."

Don't give up, don't get discouraged, but find refuge in Jesus.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Both days this weekend, pray for renewed inspiration to persevere in the good that God is doing through you. Ask God to reveal to you a glimpse of blessings to come, but nonetheless pray that you would not grow weary. Find strength and encouragement in your community of faith as you seek Jesus together. And if you do not belong to a local community of faith, ask God to help you find one.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Your impact for the weekend is to be an encouragement to another. There is someone in your life who is struggling to continue. God has placed you in their life to help them persevere in doing the right thing. Perhaps write them a note of encouragement, introduce an encouraging scripture verse relevant to their situation, or be available for a hug or conversation.

Strong genuine relationships within a local community of faith are crucial to making it through the hard times. If you or someone you know does not belong to a local group of people who are pursuing Jesus, we would like to invite you to check out Encounter. Our Grand Opening is just two weeks away on 10-10-10 and we would be honored if you could come celebrate with us

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 16 Days to Launch

Today, there are 16 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

May His Will Be Done

Today, we are looking at Matthew 6:8-13 ...
"This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Today is all about of prayer. I wasn't prepared for it, I didn't see it coming, but it is a day of prayer. This morning, I met with four ladies from Tennessee who have come to Helena specifically to pray for Encounter and our Grand Opening on 10-10-10. More accurately, they are praying for spiritual strongholds to be destroyed. They are praying for broken families and broken lives to be restored through Jesus.

So naturally, my mind is focused today on how to pray. When Jesus demonstrated for the disciples how to pray in this passage, He started with the most difficult part of prayer, "YOUR kingdom come, YOUR will be done." Too often, we have difficulty praying for His will to be done. Too often, we are praying for OUR will, OUR requests, and OUR needs. Our prayer times become a hurried wish list sent up to God, when instead they should be times to listen.

Prayer is a two-way conversation focused on God's will.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Today, let us go into prayer with an open agenda. Let us enter into this conversation with God, first listening to what He would say to us, rather than making our requests reflecting our kingdom. It sounds simple, but spend your first few minutes of prayer with God in silence. And then He will set the agenda based on His kingdom.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Your impact today is an outgrowth of Jesus' prayer. If we pray like Jesus, then we are asking for His Kingdom to come. We are asking for His will right now, right here on earth. And the best place for His Kingdom to come is through us. It is through us that our hurting, lonely, and broken neighbors will see the ways of God's Kingdom. So share the Kingdom today. Do something for someone that doesn't make sense to the ways of this world, something for someone that least deserves it, something that shows another a "glimpse" of the Kingdom of God. As Jesus said in Matthew 10:8, "Give freely as you have received."

This is the core, the raw essence of who we are at Encounter. We invite you to be a part of something greater than yourself. We invite you to step out of the boat. Come belong with a group of people discovering with what it means to follow Jesus in the context of real life. No more secondhand faith.

Encounter Grand Opening - The Beginning of Something New!

I was both excited and nervous this last Sunday — at 5:30pm in the Dunphy building, we held our third and final Sneak Peek Worship Gathering at Encounter Church in downtown Helena.

We saw more volunteers than the previous two Sneak Peeks. The music was awesome and creative. And the message focused on what we call "burning for others" — engaging and transforming our community by "bringing the kingdom near to them".

This Sneak Peek was our last chance.

It was our last chance to get it right before the Encounter Grand Opening in just over two weeks. It was our last chance for volunteers to step up to the table. It was our last chance for musicians to join in with an awesome creative band. Our last chance for people to tell their friends what an amazing thing God is doing in Helena through Encounter. It was our last chance, but was it?

It was not an end, but a beginning.

With the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10 only 17 days away, we are more excited than ever to celebrate the true beginning — the official birth of a new community of faith here in Helena. The Grand Opening will be our first publicized worship gathering and the beginning of a new regular schedule. We are asking all our friends along the way to come join us in this celebration gathering.

Show your support on this Grand Opening day!

We're also inviting the many people with whom we have connected to come find out what Jesus can do in your life. Literally, thousands of postcards are being delivered to homes near downtown Helena, inviting our neighbors to join us as we officially "ignite" the fire of Encounter.

There will be an opportunity to connect every Sunday.

Starting October 10, the 1st and 3rd Sundays each month will provide the opportunity to meet together in small group settings that we call LifeGroups — we'll build authentic relationships and do life together.

Then Encounter worship gatherings will take place on the 2nd and 4th Sunday each month to celebrate the awesome things that God is doing in our midst — we'll explore scripture and reflect creativity of our unique God .

In addition to these, we'll still gather monthly to connection with and impact our community — meeting needs and serving people.

Something awesome is happening in Helena.

A creative and unique community of faith is emerging and inviting you to be a part of something greater then yourself. You are invited to come serve our community, to be free from legalism, escape politics, explore faith in Jesus, and go deeper in your Christian walk. And the invitation is broad — to young and old, believer and not . This invitation goes out to those who are desperate to see this generation and beyond encounter God in a real and tangible way. It goes out to anyone who has tried traditional church and found it lacking — to anyone who desires to explore faith in Jesus, but wants to be free from the baggage of organized religion.

This invitation is for you!

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 17 Days to Launch

Today, there are 17 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10. We are asking you to join us in what God is doing and is going to do in these last 40 days.

Pray with us. Act with us. Imagine the impact we could have in Helena if each one of us is individually involved in making Helena a better place. Imagine the lives that could be touched. Imagine how the spiritual landscape of our community could be changed even BEFORE the grand opening.

No More Secondhand Faith!

Today, we are looking at 2 Kings 2:11-14 ...
Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!" And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in distress. Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen when he was taken up. Then Elisha returned to the bank of the Jordan River.
What an amazing site it must have been for Elisha to see his father and mentor be taken up by a chariot of fire to be with God! And at the same time, Elisha knew what this meant — no more resting of the faith of his father. Elijah was no longer there to facilitate his son's relationship with God. It was time for Elisha to trade in his "secondhand faith" and encounter God for himself.

A while back I came across Glenn Packiam's book called Secondhand Jesus: Tradinging Rumors of God for a Firsthand Faith. While I have not yet read Secondhand Jesus, I truly resonate with the title because it speaks to this condition of letting our faith become a spectator sport. Like the Israelites in Exodus 19, we let Moses climb the mountain to meet God for us.

Oswald Chambers speaks of verses 13-14 of this passage, "You have been to Jordan over and over again with Elijah, but now you are up against it alone. It is no use saying you cannot go; this experience has come, and you must go."

If you want to experience firsthand faith in God, then you must go through your Jordan yourself.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Too often we let fear dictate our obedience to God. We fear making the wrong decision so we make no decision at all. But God uses people who are more afraid of missing opportunities than making mistakes. People who dream the unthinkable and attempt the impossible. They go forward and face their Jordan alone to find God is already there waiting to move in their life.

For some of us at Encounter, we've had to let go of the "safe church" of our parent and embrace the idea of a dangerous church. We are no longer letting our mother, our father, and our professional ministers "climb the mountain for us," but instead take a bold God-sized risk to see broken lives restored by Jesus. We've stepped across our Jordan into actively making a difference in our community and the lives of those around us.

Today our prayer is for God to free us from a fear of mistakes — to allow us to experience a firsthand faith where God can step in and turn failure into victory. We can no longer expect to live our faith through someone else. Instead, we're asking God to guide us into whatever Jesus-shaped risk put before us.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Your impact today is to step out of the shadow of your Elijah. Make a bold move for Jesus to see your faith come alive! When Jesus came there was nothing but darkness, but when Jesus left there was only light. Through His Spirit we too can make that difference in the lives of our community.

Today's impact is really an invitation to take a risk. Leave the status quo behind and find true safety and comfort in boldly following Jesus. Everyday I consider that what God is doing in Helena through Encounter is nothing short of amazing! For those who are choosing take this journey with us, God is removing the barriers and restrictions we've experienced in the past. He's allowing us to experience our faith in Jesus firsthand. You can too!

There are only 17 days left before the Encounter Church Grand Opening. We invite you to be a part of something greater than yourself. We invite you to step out of the boat. Come belong with a group of people discovering with what it means to follow Jesus in the context of real life. No more secondhand faith.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 18 Days to Launch

Today, there are 18 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Trapped by Failure?

Today, we are looking at Luke 23:32-43 ...
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom."
In this passage, we read that two others were led out to also be crucified with Jesus. Unlike Jesus, these two "criminals" were guilty of offenses punishable by death — even death on a cross. By all worldly standards, you are a failure if you are hanging on a cross near the end of your life.

The first criminal continues in his failure hurling insults at Jesus, but the second utters those fateful words, "remember me when you come into your Kingdom." Then Jesus assures him that he will be with Jesus in paradise.

Through Jesus, even complete and utter failure can be turned into victory.

TODAY'S PRAYER

One thought that looms over any church planter's head, is the possibility of failure. While planting Encounter Church definitely has it's challenges, we have also seen victories. In some cases, we have experienced failures like the FWD Family Christmas Gathering last year. Other times we've seen great successes like Good Friday FWD and the 2009 Kids Fall Fest. And the true victories are those won in the lives of individuals — marriages strengthened, families restored, lives surrendered.

So think about it. Think about a failure you've experienced recently. Think about an event that disappointed you greatly. Our prayer today is for God to help us see that failure for what it is. Perhaps it was for God to get you where He wants you. Perhaps He is ready to turn it into a victory. Ask God to help turn your dead end into a mere detour for His will.

TODAY'S IMPACT

The second criminal on the cross next to Jesus got a second chance. Yes, he experienced failure. But because of Jesus, he was ultimately victorious. At Encounter, we like to say that we are like a burning bush. We want to be an opportunity for people to experience God through us.

So you impact today is to live up to those words. Allow someone today to see Jesus through you. Just as the criminal was close to Jesus, someone will be close to you. They may be experiencing failure in their lives. They might even be calling out to you.

Through even the simplest of encouragement, this is your opportunity to speak life into their world. This is your opportunity to let them know that through Jesus, we can be victorious. We are not destined to be trapped by our failures, but rather experience forgiveness and abundant life.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 19 Days to Launch

Today, there are 19 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

When We Least Deserve It

Today, we are taking from John 8:3-11 ...
"Teacher," they said to Jesus, "this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?"
This interaction between the religious leaders and Jesus is always an interesting read. We read it in the scriptures and say, "Of course she should be forgiven!" But when faced with similar situations in real life our reactions vary.

According to religious law, she was to be stoned to death. But by the grace of Jesus, He challenges us not to condemn others, but instead to examine our own lives. In the end, Jesus says to each of us, "I do not condemn you. Go and sin no more."

Like Jesus, we are to love people when they least expect and deserve it.

TODAY'S PRAYER

We must first examine ourselves. If we are truthful, we would find ourselves guilty of many offenses against God and others. Sometimes we are blind to these offenses, and sometimes we put ourselves under deep guilt and shame. Ask God to reveal your offenses and to forgive you of these. And instead of living under law-imposed guilt, begin to live in the freedom of Jesus who simply says, "Go and sin no more."

TODAY'S IMPACT

We are reminded in Romans 3:23 that we have all sinned. Every single one of us falls short of God's standard set up in the Old Testament laws. To put it bluntly, none of us deserve God's grace. As you interact with others today, keep in mind that Jesus loves others when they least expect it and least deserve it.

Your impact today, is to love others like Jesus does. This is another chance to show those around you that "the Kingdom of God has come near." Instead of offering guilt and punishment, offer love and forgiveness. Perhaps when you are driving, perhaps in line at the store, maybe even in the classroom or workplace, and especially when it is least deserved.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 20 Days to Launch

Today, there are 20 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Challenge Assumptions

Today, we are looking at Genesis 15:5 ...
Then the Lord took Abram [Abraham] outside and said to him, "Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!"
God is full of promises for those who seek Him. In this verse, God takes Abraham for a night of star gazing. But it's easy to miss the significance of what God DID amidst the significance of what He SAID.

Can you imagine? Abraham was probably comfortable inside His tent. He was prepared for a good night's sleep. He assumed that his day's journey was at an end. But then, God took Abraham outside.

Sometimes we get comfortable in our assumptions, but then we cannot imagine what God has in store for us.

Immeasurably More

Today, we start the final countdown to the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10. Our tendency is to rely on what we know — to assume we know what God has in store. But on the contrary! Ephesians 3:20 tell us that God can accomplish "immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine." That blows our assumptions to high heaven (pun intended).

Here are some assumptions that we, at Encounter, have been challenging over the last year:
  • Churches don't go out to serve people and meet needs in the community.
  • I have to clean up my act before attending a church, because people there are perfect.
  • Church music is boring. They don't have rock bands ... or put on concerts.
  • Sermons are long sleepy monologues that I can't relate with or apply in my life.
  • A church congregation would never throw purple fuzzy balls around during the message.
  • I can go back to my regular life after the worship gathering. There's no connection with my faith and real life.
We had our plans for Encounter, and while the vision God has given us remains the same, He has challenged our assumptions of what a church can be. He has created a community of faith that is more authentic, real, and exciting than we had every hoped or imagined. Isn't that Just like God?

TODAY'S PRAYER

In keeping with a simple focus, our prayer today is to ask God to challenge our assumptions. Even more, allow God to take you star gazing like Abraham and to tear down all your assumptions. Know right now, that He is doing far greater with Encounter that we can even see, hope, or imagine. And He is working in your life right now to do amazing things in the near future.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Consider today what assumptions are holding you back. Are you actively participating with others in making our city a better place? Are you engaging your friends, co-workers, and fellow students to encounter God? If not, why? One way might be to volunteer to help for the Kids Fall Fest on Saturday, October 9. Encounter is looking for just 6 volunteers to to operate FREE kids inflatables and give away FREE cotton candy & popcorn. If you are willing, contact us today. Take an intentional step today to "Be The Change."

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 21 Days to Launch

Today, there are 21 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Lifting Jesus Up

Today, we are looking at John 12:23 ...
And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself."
Jesus knew that He would endure the cross. In this scripture, He was telling His disciples that the cross was necessary. Even more, "being lifted up" has several depths of meaning. Yes, Jesus would physically be "lifted up" on the cross. But Jesus also promises that whenever He is "lifted up" in our hearts — that is, when we begin trust in His suffering and death upon the cross as the penalty for OUR sins, then He will draw us to Him.

When we lift up Jesus above everything else, He draws all people to Himself.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Today, there are only three weeks left in our 40 day countdown to our Grand Opening on 10.10.10. Tonight is a milestone in our church planting journey — it is our third and final Sneak Peek Worship Gathering. And as we reach milestones like this, we are reminded why we are doing this. We want people to be drawn to Jesus.

So our prayer today is simple. Pray that through our Worship Gatherings, LifeGroups, and Community Impact efforts, people would be drawn to Jesus. Ask God to allow people to see Jesus through who we are and what we do. Let us never forget the simple goal of lifting Jesus up.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Let's make today's impact simple as well. Bring a friend to tonight's Sneak Peek Worship Gathering. Here are four great reasons why. And then come with an expectation to hear Jesus lifted up.

4 Great Reasons To Check Out Encounter Tomorrow

Wow! Tomorrow is our third and final Sneak Peek Worship Gathering. I can't help but look back and see how God has moved over this Summer in preparation for the Encounter Grand Opening in three weeks!

We've held concerts for the community, a day in the park, we've connected personally with neighborhoods, and provided the Rock Wall at Alive@Five. You can see all the photos here! And in the midst of all that, we've also held Sneak Peek Worship Gatherings in July and August, and now we're doing it again in September for the last time.

Burn For Others

This third Sneak Peek Worship Gathering will retain our authentic and casual atmosphere, the band is going to rock, and we're going explore what it means to "Burn for Others!" We're going to talk about the importance of Engaging our Culture and connecting with people in our community to make a difference in people's lives.

4 Great Reasons to Check It Out

With all this said, we're saying that you need to come tomorrow. You don't want to miss it! And here's are 4 great reasons why.
  1. Last chance to get a "Sneak Peek." Tomorrow is one last opportunity to check us out before the Grand Opening on 10.10.10. That means that you're getting in on the ground floor of something new that God is doing in Helena. You can get a "sneak peek" of the creativity and honest interactions of a unique community of faith.
  2. Confirm what you've been hearing. Not only can you confirm what you've been hearing about Encounter, checking us out tomorrow means you'll be ready to get serious about your faith journey and start in on our regular schedule in three weeks. We have a heart for people and our community. We truly are a "burning bush" in Helena, seeking to be something different the catches people's attention so that they can Encounter God, Experience Community, and Engage Culture.
  3. You won't be bored. We strongly believe that it is a "sin" to make God seem boring. An encounter with Him should be life-changing, so we put our best into designing an atmosphere so that you can get lost in the worship and engage with the message. No sleepy-time here! Plus, we invite your dialogue as we explore the scriptures together — we even encourage phone texting during the service! Oh yeah, did I mention that the music rocks!
  4. The EncounterKids session will be awesome! While the kids hang out with us during the worship time, we have a cool new kids experience during the adult message and discussion time. We're talking fun music, goofy videos, and lots of plastic balls — but solid stuff on how to be like Jesus and engage our world.
You Are Invited!

Whether it is the adult or kids environments, we want people not only wanting to come back next time, but also excited to tell their friends. But an event does not a church make — nor is it a substitute for a life lived for Jesus. We are a community of faith longing to see God to make a difference for young and old, believers and nonbelievers alike.

So come join us tomorrow and invite your friends!

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 22 Days to Launch

Today, there are 22 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Building an Altar

Today, we are looking at Joshua 22:26-27 ...
"So we decided to build the altar, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a memorial. It will remind our descendants and your descendants that we, too, have the right to worship the Lord at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings. Then your descendants will not be able to say to ours, 'You have no claim to the Lord.'
Have you ever noticed in the Old Testament scriptures, how people were always building altars? In fact, you'll find over 600 references to the word "altar" in all of scripture. Why were people so into altars? Building an alter is a way to remind us, and a way to remember, a significant encounter with God.

Someone once said, "We tend remember the things we should forget, and forget the things we should remember." An altar gives us a place to go back to remember when we had a life-changing experience with God. Altars remind us that He was faithful before and continues to be so.

Perhaps we need to consider building new altars to remind us of what God is doing now. They may not need to be physical, but consider building established altars in the journals we keep, the stories we tells, and the memories we keep.

We need holy places to remember the faithfulness and greatness of God.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Remember that the past is a nice place to visit, but our past experiences with God should remind us that He is always doing something new. We're not to worship and act only out of what God did once before, but out of fresh encounters with Him.

Therefore, pray for a fresh encounter with Him today. Pray for God to do something new in your life today for which you can build an altar to inspire faith tomorrow — for both for you and others. Fresh encounters sometimes require a change of routine. They require stepping out of the status quo. God doesn't want us to "lip sync" our worship to Him. So, ask Him to help you identify and remember the personal alters of your faith journey, and then worship Him today in newness.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Newness requires new action. So, today's impact is to build new altars — reminders of God for you and others. Connect with someone today and be mindful of the location. Buy them a coffee or even a meal. Make it a significant connection. Invest yourself into another's life and allow them to see that the "Kingdom has come near to them." Invite a friend to Sunday's Sneak Peek Worship Gathering and perhaps that encounter — that place — will serve as a new altar reminding them of the greatness of God.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 23 Days to Launch

Today, there are 23 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Waiting for the Promised Land?

Today, we are looking at Exodus 3:5-6a ...
"Do not come any closer," the Lord warned. "Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob."
When Moses woke up that morning, I'm sure he felt it would be just like any other day. He had probably tended his sheep around this location before. But the bush was never on fire before. And even more, Moses had never seen a bush on fire that was not consumed by the flames. This was certainly out-of-the-ordinary. It was out of the routine.

After catching his attention, why do you think God told Moses that he was standing on holy ground? Sure, it was a place of God's presence. But here's something to think about: God chose this ordinary, routine location and made it a place of a holy encounter. As Mark Batterson says, "The holy ground was not the Promised Land, it was right were Moses was standing."

Don't wait to follow God till you get to the Promised Land.

TODAY'S PRAYER

We are a lot like Moses. We are caught up in a routine going along our normal, everyday lives. And because of this we tend to take for granted the amazing miracles God performs all around us. When was the last time you said to God, "Wow! Thanks for allowing the sun to rise this morning. I was really worried about that." The point is, we can worship God and follow Him along the way — we're not supposed to wait until we get to the Promised Land.

Pray that God would speak to you amidst your routine. Ask that your routine NOT get in the way of following and worshiping Him. And stop waiting for that "Promised Land," that time and place in the future. He can help you find a change of perspective that inspires you to do something significant for Him today.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Change of Place + Change of Pace = Change of Perspective

This simple equation can help you break out of the routine and find the change of perspective you need, in order to hear God better. Your impact today is to purposely carve out some time today to seek out both a "change of place" and a "change of pace."

Perhaps drive a different route home. Maybe take a walk after work or school. Plan to come to Sunday's Sneak Peek Worship Gathering, or even help out with Encounter as we launch. Decide today you'll no longer wait for your "Promised Land" to begin following God's purpose for you. Seek to Worship Him and follow Him along the way, and you'll begin to see the miracles He's already performing in your daily life.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 24 Days to Launch

Today, there are 24 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Stop Being Too Responsible!

Today, we are looking at Luke 9:59-60 ...
[Jesus] said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
This interaction seems simple enough. When Jesus ask the man to follow Him, the man wanted to bury his father. The man wanted to be responsible. But Jesus saw right through him — the man was turning his responsibility into an excuse.

The truth is that God's will does not always make sense to the wisdom of the world. Sometimes following God means being what Mark Batterson calls, "irresponsibly responsible." While we often cannot ignore our earthly responsibilities, we must remember this...

Don't let your spiritual passions get buried beneath your daily responsibilities.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Our prayer today is to re-focus our priorities. Don't let those God-given dreams die — if I had, we would not be planting Encounter Church today. Ask God to allow you windows in your day, in your week, and in your month, to fulfill the plans for which He has prepared for you.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Take some time out today to spend time with God. Read His Word and meditate on what He is trying to show you. Too often, we shrug God's plan to focus on our work, kid's sports, housework, and other things. We use these as an excuse for not knowing God better or for not really following Jesus. While our earthly responsibilities are important, ask God to reveal to you His priorities.

Perhaps you could spend more time serving others. Perhaps He desires for you to support a ministry in a more substantial way. Maybe He's calling you to help start Encounter. Today's impact is to seek His will, and then ask God to help you to pursue His leading in the days and weeks to come.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 25 Days to Launch

Today, there are 25 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Do Something. Take Action.

Today, we are looking at Matthew 16:24 ...
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.
Jesus taught to His followers a way or a path. He talked of faith not as a destination, but as a journey. He spoke of seeking, entering, and encountering the Kingdom of God. More than words or correct beliefs and doctrine, Jesus called his followers to action — to a way of living. And as a result, the earliest Christians were known as followers of "The Way."

We are called not just to believe, but to deny ourselves and follow the way of Jesus.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Many believe in Jesus, but few are willing to follow Him. Few are willing to "take up their cross." And while James 1:22 encourages us to be "doers of the Word, and not just hearers," few are willing to put into practice the words that Jesus taught.

Our prayer today is for God to release us from inaction. Pray that we would to move from believing "about" Jesus, to believing "in" Jesus. Ask God to help you take the words of Jesus seriously when He encourages us to engage the outside world in a tangible way – be salt and light as in Matthew 5:13-16.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Become salt and light to someone you encounter today. Perhaps pay for the meal of the person behind you at the drive-thru window. At Starbucks or your favorite coffee shop, allow someone to go ahead of you in line.

In Matthew 5:16, Jesus encourages us to "let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." Our challenge today is to not only hear these words of Jesus, but to act on them.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 26 Days to Launch

Today, there are 26 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Learn To Become Dangerous

Today, we are looking at Matthew 21:12 ...
Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves.
In this passage, we see what I call the dangerous Jesus. The image is a far cry from the meek and mild Jesus with whom we are so comfortable. Further to verse 14 after Jesus cleansed the temple, it was then "the blind and the lame came to him in the Temple, and he healed them."

Sometimes we prefer to endure unhealthy situations and destructive lifestyles rather to endure the painful process of growth and life-change that brings healing. The challenge for us, is to decide whether we will be "dangerous" to the status quo or will we be "safe." Will we seek restoration or will we settle for second best.

God desires the very best for you, your family, and your community. And He is still willing to overturn tables and drive out anything that is second best.

TODAY'S PRAYER

We are planting Encounter Church in Helena to see people's lives changed for the better. God has moved us to extremes. Every day we embrace the risk of rejection, the risk of an unstable income, and the risk of failure. It's not comfortable, it's not safe, but it is a healthy process of growth and change.

Our prayer today involves listening to God's response when we ask him the "dangerous" questions. What must I be willing to do? How must I be dangerous? Am I truly committed to seeing people's lives changed, even if it means enduring discomfort?

As you pray, allow God to overturn the tables in your heart. When was the last time you had an uncivilized experience with God? Allow Him to drive out those strongholds that are holding you back from being fully committed to His very best.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Your challenge today is to take a tangible step in becoming "dangerous" for God. Stop playing it safe. We challenge you to commit yourself to making a lasting impact in Helena through Encounter. When was the last time you took a faith-risk? When was the last time you took a bold stand for Christ? Isn't it time to become dangerous?

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 27 Days to Launch

Today, there are 27 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Accomplish the Impossible Today

Today, we are looking at Matthew 19:26 ...
Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible."
What is it that changes the heart of a person? What will cause them to accept an invitation to church? Or more importantly an invitation to explore faith in Jesus? I don't know if you are like me, but I recently had a discussion with a friend about expected outcomes. Our conversation revolved around how we typically over-analyze situations expecting the worse possible outcome. This is the trap we eventually experience in our lives: we become de-motivated because we say that "it is impossible" to do great things.

And here is the truth — humanly speaking, it truly may be impossible. When we began this church planting journey for instance, we knew that it would be so beyond what we could accomplish by ourselves that we would completely and utterly fail ... UNLESS God was part of it.

Because with God everything is possible.

TODAY'S PRAYER

As we prepare this week for our Sneak Peek Worship Gathering on Sunday, there is a danger to become overwhelmed. There is a danger to say it is impossible. Volunteers, music, setup & tear down, rehearsals, message preparation, PowerPoint — it seems impossible that it would all come together in human terms. But in humanly impossible situations I've seen God come through time and time again, because with God everything is possible.

Our prayer today, then, is for the impossible that God would accomplish in our midst. We are praying for the preparation of this week's Sneak Peek Worship Gathering, we are praying for the Grand Opening on 10-10-10, we are praying for key volunteers. But most of all, we are praying for God to draw people to an encounter with Him that is life-changing. We are praying for hearts of people to be changed. We are praying for the spiritual landscape of Helena to be changed.

TODAY'S IMPACT

As we pray for hearts to be changed, let us work WITH God. Perhaps you have a neighbor that you have not connected with. Perhaps there have been "neighborly issues" between the two of you. Perhaps you know your neighbor well, but he or she has not been open to faith discussions.

Our impact today is to do something positive and simple for your neighbor. Help them experience the love of Jesus in a tangible way. Do something that has no strings attached where you expect nothing in return. Bring them a small gift such as a plant, a loaf of bread, or a candle. Or even more, so something like rake the leaves in their lawn. Through whatever it is, allow the Kingdom to come near to them today ... and then God will easily accomplish what is humanly impossible.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 28 Days to Launch

Today, there are 28 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

National Back to Church Sunday?

Today, we are looking at Hebrew 10:23-25 ...
Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
You may or may not know that today is National Back to Church Sunday. What an interesting concept to dedicate a single annual day where church-goers intentionally invite their friends and family to go to church. Please don't get me wrong, but I can't help but feel that such an event is an adventure in missing the point.

For the most part, those estimated 8 million people who once attended church are not absent now because no one has invited them back. It goes much deeper. As Thom Rainer wrote in his book Essential Church, those who do not attend have not found the church experience essential to their lives. Those things that should make our "meeting together" essential have been missing — true authentic relationships with others, a safe place to explore and be encouraged, a place where broken things are restored, and most importantly, the love and grace of Jesus.

Take, for instance, the example of a woman who wrote this blog article on her decision to no longer attend church. I'm not saying all her arguments are valid, I'm just saying that we need to listen deeper to the true needs she expresses. Specifically, she wants to spend more time with her family. She wants "to have authentic relationships with people." The sad thing is that she has not found these within her community of faith and is going outside the church to find them.

Let us not neglect our meeting together.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Our goal is not to get people to come back to a church building. Our true prayer is for people to encounter God. Our prayer is that people would move toward a growing relationship with Jesus, because a relationship with Jesus brings life. And when people experience "life to the full" as Jesus promises, they also long to share these things with others who have discovered the same. Then our meetings together become an opportunity "to motivate one another to acts of love and good works," an opportunity to "encourage one another" and hold tightly to the promises of God.

So let us pray today, that we would be an example of the Church, and an example of the people that Jesus intended. Pray that, like the burning bush, people would encounter God through us. In our daily interactions as we invest our lives into those around us, we pray that they will truly know Jesus.

TODAY'S IMPACT

Instead of choosing just one day a year to invite people to a church event, we are called to live lives every day that intentionally invite people to know Jesus personally. As part of that process, we develop relationships inside and outside our community of faith. Today's impact is two-fold.
  1. Make plans NOW to "not neglect meeting together" by gathering next Sunday for the Encounter Sneak Peek Worship Gathering.
  2. Use this week to begin developing a lifestyle of intentionally investing your life into others. Invite a friend or family member to a meal, to a movie, to a conversation, to coffee, or something else. As you develop that relationship, they will see Jesus through you — and you will have the opportunity to invite them to meet with others who are on the same journey. You might even be able to invite them to the Grand Opening on 10-10-10!

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 29 Days to Launch

Today, there are 29 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

The Church is Not a Building

Today, we are looking at Luke 10:2 ...
"...The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields."
Starting a new ministry is an interesting endeavor. Many people like to observe. Many people like to see the benefits and results of a dynamic, life-giving ministry — but few actually break away from the status quo in their lives to be involved in making it a reality.

The truth is that "changing the world" is not spectator sport. Worship gatherings, community impact, and LifeGroups are not shows or performances to enjoy, but rather opportunities to get involved and be the change.

The Church itself is not a building. It is not a once-a-week event. The Church is a people drawn together under one cause — Jesus. And because Jesus builds His Church, He knew that "workers for the harvest" would be few. Jesus knew that many would observe, but even fewer would take action.

"So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields."

TODAY'S PRAYER

So simply, today's prayer is for God to send "more workers into the fields." Let us pray for those whose heart breaks for the things that break the heart of God. Pray that others would be motivated to action through God's Spirit. Also let us pray for people to go beyond interest, beyond observation, and move forward to become a part of something greater than themselves — a unique, creative, and authentic community of faith called Encounter.

TODAY'S IMPACT

As we focus on workers for the harvest, my thoughts move to public places around Helena like the Farmer Market. Right now, I am preparing to meet a couple of people to give away FREE Tootsie Pops at the Farmers Market. (You can join us at 10:30am today if you are reading this early.) We're going to initiate some casual conversations, form some new friendships, and invite people to know Encounter better.

Your challenge today is the same. Initiate some conversations, build some friendships, and invite people to know about Encounter better. Essentially invest yourself in others to that they can encounter God in a new, fresh, and tangible way.

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 30 Days to Launch

Today, there are 30 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Reflecting Our Creative God

Today, we are looking at Genesis 1:1-2 ...
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
The first words of scripture declare "In the beginning God created the heaves and the earth." And because human beings are made in the image of God, we not only can love and feel emotion, but we also have the capacity to create – to be creative.

That means that God values our creativity as artists, craft workers, musicians, actors, and more. Our creativity intrinsically embodies a message and a worldview. And if we seek to pursue Jesus, so will our art. This is one of the reasons we at Encounter value artists and creativity. We believe the Church should not only seek to be relevant to local culture, but be an agent of transformation.

Encounter will continue to be known for cultivating creativity and great musicianship by providing a forum for local musicians and artists to showcase their creative skills and talents.

TODAY'S PRAYER

Let us pray today for God's creative power to be unleashed in Helena. Pray that God allows Encounter to be a movement dedicated to making Jesus known through the uniqueness and creativity of it's artists. Pray specifically for even more musicians and artists to participate in the upcoming Sneak Peek, the Grand Opening, and following worship gatherings.

Finally, pray for God to reveal His creativity through you. Even if you do not consider yourself an artist, you are made in God's image. Therefore you are able to display amazing creativity even in the most seemingly mundane activities.

TODAY'S IMPACT

First, have you hugged an artist today? Seriously, seek out the first local musician or artist who comes to mind. Invite them to investigate Encounter as a possible "outlet" for their creativity. (Right now we're especially looking for guitarists and drummers.)

Second, do something creative yourself. Ask God to display Himself through you as you perform your daily tasks. Creatively strike up a conversation. Or get downright serious and break out some crayons and paper. I'm serious people! Get creative like you did in elementary school. After all, Jesus said "Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."

40 Days of Prayer & Impact: 31 Days to Launch

Today, there are 31 DAYS before the Encounter Grand Opening on 10-10-10.

Loving Your Enemies. Ouch!

Today, we are looking at Matthew 5:43-44 ...
"You have heard the law that says, 'Love your neighbor' and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!"
Without a doubt, one of the really hard sayings of Jesus is to love our enemies. It goes against what we feel and against what people around us tell us we should do. But Jesus explained, "If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that." His calling for us is radically different from the norm.

You may have been following the recent controversy of a Florida Pastor's plan to burn copies of the Muslim Quran on 9/11. Sometimes, even followers of Jesus get caught up in the way the world sees justice. But the truth of the matter is, as NewLifeChurch pastor Rick Bezet recently posted on Twitter, "If Jesus taught us to love our enemies then burning the quran can't be christlike." Well said.

Jesus calls us to be revolutionary, even dangerous to the status quo and the patterns of the culture — by loving others, especially our enemies.

TODAY'S PRAYER

There are many hard sayings of Jesus that we read and then go on our way as if they don't apply to us. It may be that we haven't even come to terms with an "enemy" of ours, and yet Jesus calls for us to love them — not with love that world understands, but with the unconditional love that only comes from God Himself.

Pray for an "enemy" today. Perhaps you've been wronged. Perhaps you've been wounded. Maybe it's just someone that you don't particularly like or get along with. Ask God to fill you with His love to be able to pray blessings for your "enemy."

TODAY'S IMPACT

Today's impact is to go one step further. Taking from Tuesday's impact, "Don't just stand there, do something." Make an intentional effort to bless your "enemy." Give them an honest compliment. Do something nice, like pick up a coffee for them. And more than anything, don't do it in your own strength, but ask God's Spirit to enable you to bless them from His strength.
